A MEMORABLE DAY IN MY LIFE

A man has many memorable days in his life. When he thinks of them they crowd in his memory. I have also many memorable days in my life. Most of them are still fresh and vivid in my mind. But not I am to choose one and only one.

However, a day of the prize distribution is the most memorable day in my life. On that day I received prizes for excellent recitation. When I think of this day, my mind becomes full of pride and joy.

That was a happy day for all the students. The school premises were decorated with flags and festoons. A nice gate was built to welcome the Deputy Commission who presided over the function. I also came to the function in fine dress. As I stood first in the Annual Examination, I was one of the prize-winners. I also stood first in the recitation of poems. So I was the winner of another prize. So our Assistant Headmaster told me to sit on the bench for the prize -winners.

At the time of prize distribution, the Assistant Headmaster shouted my name and told me to receive the prize for recitation. I walked to the platform, shook the president by the hand, received the prize and came back to my seat. I also received the second prize in the same way when I was called for to receive it. All looked at me with a feeling of appreciation. It was the most glorious day in my life. My parents waited impatiently on that day and they showed the prizes to many people in the neighbourhood. So it is the most memorable day of my life.

The day was extremely pleasant to me. I shall never forget the charms of the day.

A Memorable Day in My Life

Life is indeed a drudgery of routine. Normally we are unable to distinguish one day from the other. There are however some days that have a special significance for us, for example our birthdays or that of our near and dear ones. We do not easily forget them but look forward to them. Besides this, there is day, which is the happiest day of our life. It marks a turning point in our life, which we can never forget.

It was just last year when I had appeared for my JSC examination. I had tried my best to write down on the answer scripts. As the day for the announcement of results drew nearer my nervousness increased giving me sleepless nights. At time I had terrible nightmares that made my hairs stand on end. I knew my parents had great expectations from me and the thought of letting them down made me paranoid.

It was the May 27 at about 10 a.m. my friend Rana, rang up to inform that I had topped in the school. He had just seen the results from the internet site and had rung up to congratulate me. I was speechless, for so numb was I with apprehension, that his words did not immediately register. I was barely able to say ‘Thank you’ and gentle put the phone down. By this time my parents and sister were crowding round me to know what the matter was. I jubilantly told them about my result. I informed them that I have got A+. What followed was just indescribable. While my parents kissed and hugged me my friend came around to congratulate me.

Within no time the news spread throughout the neighborhood. I had indeed become a star overnight. This was something I had just not anticipated, but it meant to me more than anything else. It was indeed a milestone towards my ambition to become a scientist.

Looking back I feel elated for what happened that fateful day which was the happiest day of my life. This day, which shall always be fresh in my memory for it was the turning point in my life.

AN OCCASION I REMEMBER

Human life is full of incidents and occasions. Of many occasions, some are long lasting having a deep impression on mind. The occasion that I remember now is the last annual sports day of my school. Annual sports day is the most eventful and exciting day of our school.

This year the Annual sports of our school were held in the month of February / March/ April amidst rejoicing and merry-making. It was a happy day for us. The class works were suspended on that day. The date of the sports was fixed in a meeting of the teachers. At first the game teacher selected the best competitors after taking hits. Then the invitation cards were issued to the guardians, local gentlemen and the officers.

An arrangement committee was elected taking one student from each class. With the help of the teachers and students, the school field was enclosed and decorated. A gate was erected at the entrance of the field. Tracks were made and a mike was fitted. The arena was arranged in a suitable way and decorated very tastefully. Adequate seating arrangements were made for spectators-male and female. All the students and teachers were present in the field. Many persons including the invited guests also came to witness the sports.

The sports started punctually at 10 a.m. This was followed by the hoisting of the National Flag and the recitation of the holy Quran. Immediately after this, the march past took place and the Headmaster took the salute. Thereafter, he declared the sports open and the competitors took the oath of allegiance. Then the actual sports began. There were 27 items in all. The most important events of the sports were ‘100 metre sprint’, ‘400 metre sprint’, ‘800 metre race’, ‘javelin throw’, ‘putting shot’, ‘discus throw’, ‘broad jump’, ‘high jump’, ‘pole vault’, ‘hurdle race’, ‘weight lifting’, ‘pillow fight’, ‘tug-of–war’, ‘dress as you like’ etc. ‘Dress as you like’ aroused great cheering among the spectators. They were taken up one after another according to the programme. There were three groups of competitors --- Senior, Junior and Intermediate. I belonged to the senior group. The names of the competitors were announced over the mike. The performance in all the above events was of a high order and surpassed all the previous records of the school.

Immediately after the sports had been over, trophies were given to the successful competitors by the D.C. who was the chief Guest of

the function. I took part in three items ----------  the high jump, the longjump and the pole vault. I got First position in the high jump and second in other two items. The D.C. delivered a fine speech in which he encouraged the students to be specially attentive to physical exercise. He also inspired us to earn more knowledge besides doing extra-curricular activities.

The function ended at 4 p.m. It was a happy day indeed. I enjoyed the occasion best as I was considered one of the best competitors. The day was a refreshing day from the monotony of routined life. It was actually a day of all days in our life.

                INDEPENDENT ANTI-CORRUPTION COMMISSION

Corruption has become an enduring pattern of our public life. At present corruption is rampant in basic services, like-healthcare, education, police, Judiciary, land administration, taxation and power. It also affects the government, business community, political system, NGOs, financial sectors, etc. It is practically posing a threat to our democratic process. It is obstructing the operation of market forces, creating bottlenecks in administrative system, preventing justice and fairness, discouraging the spirit of public services and impeding sustainable development. Multilateral donor agencies such as World Bank and UNDP estimate that 30 to 40 percent of development fund of Bangladesh are misappropriated by corrupt means. In fact corruption has become synonymous to mis-governance in Bangladesh. Bangladesh has been rated by the Transparency International as the most corrupt country in the world.

When political leaders and officials engage in bribery and graft, they are accountable to an impartial judiciary called anti-corruption commission. With this end in view the government of Bangladesh formulated independent Anti-Corruption Commission in the month of November 2004 and the commission has started its office. This is unfortunate that even the donor agencies have clearly stated that it is not lack of resource, it is rather the weakness of institutions which is responsible for slow growth of Bangladesh economy. Politicisation has already made the weak and inefficient bureaucracy almost nonfunctional. It is difficult for us to believe that the Commission can take strong decision unpleasant to the corrupt people. It has, however, admitted that it would not be possible for it to root out corruption totally from the country though it can be reduced to a great extent.

We do not know the extent of satisfaction of the donor agencies in the establishment of the Commission. It depends on the quality of performance of the Commission. Let the commission work independently to exercise its accountability to the democratic parliament as well as the constitution.

THE MOST MEMORABLE EVENT OF MY LIFE

Our life is full of many interesting events. Of them some are so memorable as cannot be erased from the memory. I also have some memorable events in my life. But the most memorable one is really very interesting and exciting.

At that time I was in class nine/ten. I was chosen to represent my school at an interschool debate. The topic was related to the empowerment of the Bangladeshi woman. I seemed least ‘empowered’ to attempt the speech. My legs trembled at the thought of confronting an attentive audience, perhaps ready to smirk, the moment I faltered.

However, I rehearsed my speech many times over before my teachers till I was absolutely sure of delivering it flawlessly. Finally, dawned the ‘doomsday’. I reached the scene of the competition. The sight of the stage, the lectern, the microphone was enough to leave me shaken. I overcame my confusion and uncertainty, reminding myself that nothing could possibly go wrong.

A number of speakers preceded me to the stage but I was utterly oblivious of what they had to say, for I was too preoccupied with repeating my speech to myself for the last time, lest I should forget it on the stage. Finally, my name was announced. I wanted to turn back and bolt, but there was no escaping now at the last minute. I went to the stage, feigning confidence, I started with great aplomb, although my legs were shaking. All the instructions about maintaining an eye contact with the audience were swept away. I looked at the ceiling and gave my speech. Occasionally, I looked at the audience. Some, amongst the audience nodded intelligibly, much to my relief. Soon, I got carried away by my own arguments, that suddenly seemed very powerful and convincing, even though this was not the first time I was repeating them. Soon I realised that there was absolute silence. Perhaps, the audience was too bored to react. I carried on in the same vein, for I had no other choice except finishing my speech and making a dignified exit.

To my utter surprise, as I walked down the stage there was thunderous applause, Apparently, I had made the desired impact. With bated breath I waited for the results. To my delight, I had won the first place, Finally, I had made my ‘debut’ as speaker.

The event marked a scratch in my heart because it was the first time I was selected for something and I proved myself to be successful. So the event shall always remain in my memory.

THE MOST MEMORABLE EVENT OF MY LIFE

My first air flight in an aeroplane is, so far, the most memorable event in my life. It has occupied an abiding place at the core of my heart. For quite a long time, I had been waiting for this mornent. And at last I got the chance.

My elder brother who lives in Dhaka with his family told me that lie would send me an air-ticket from Jessore to Dhaka, if I obtained GPA-5 in the SSC Exam. I took the offer quite seriously and engaged all my energy in the study. By the grace of Almighty Allah, my efforts were rewarded, for I got GPA-5 in the said examination. My brother was quite happy and he was true to his word.

It was the month of April, 2007. From the Biman Office, a bus of Bangladesh Biman took us to the airport. After checking in I was given a boarding card with my seat number on it. I was waiting in the lounge with other passengers to board the aeroplane. It was a special moment and I was full of excitement.

I also felt nervous at that time. Then I walked upstairs with other passengers. A well-dressed air hostess welcomed the passengers. Another hostess showed my seat. I was lucky enough to have my seat beside a window. The pilot of the plane greeted us. He told us to fasten our seat belts properly. And then the great moment came. Our plane started to take off. I was scared at the deafening sound and the jerk.

Gradually everything became right. The plane finally took off and was flying in the sky. It rose higher and higher. Houses and buildings below looked like toy houses. The plane was moving very smoothly through the clouds. In the plane, we were given orange juice to drink. The hostess also gave us some chocolates, sandwich and cakes. The flight lasted for only 35 minutes, and then landed at the Zia International Airport, Dhaka. Completing all the airport procedures in about 30 minutes, I got out and found my beloved brother waiting with a smiling face.

My first air flight from Jessore to Dhaka was of a very short duration. But it had a lasting impression oil my mind. And, no doubt, it was really the most memorable event in my life.

THE MOST MEMORABLE INCIDENT OF YOUR LIFE

Many incidents happen in the life of a man. Most of them are forgotten with the passage of time. Only a few incidents that have lasting impression upon the mind, remain fresh in memory. Any references to these incidents take us back to the situation and fill our minds with fresh emotions.

I am still a student. I am just seventeen. Within this short span of life a few incidents happened that are worth mentioning. Among them I recollect one incident which changed the way of my life.

I come of a middle class family living at Paschimgaon. I read up to class V in a village primary school. I took the Primary Scholarship examination and was awarded a talent pool scholarship. But I was not good at English. In primary schools of our country English is not taught seriously. This subject is excluded from the scholarship examination. Naturally, I remained weak in English. In my village home there was none to teach me. My mother also could not teach me this subject. Consequently, for no fault of my own I was weak in English.

After the annual examination, I went to Faridpur Zilla School for admission. The Headmaster tasted me. He asked me some questions on Bengali and Arithmetic and was satisfied with my performance. But when he asked me questions on English, I could not give correct answers. He said, “You are weak in English.” I said, “Sir, please admit me, I shall make up my deficiency in this subject.” However, he was please to admit me in Class VI. My mother asked me to stay in the boarding house of the school. Accordingly, I stayed in the school hostel and devoted myself to studies. But as before I got no interest in English.

Our English teacher, Mr. Sirajul Haque, was very strict. He warned the students if they did not learn their lessons. He made them kneel down and stand up on the bench. For some days I could somehow avoid his attention. But one day he stared me in the face. He could understand that I did not learn my lessons. He asked me some questions relating to the story ‘Unit is Strength’, told by Sabina’s grandfather. I could not answer. Our teacher got angry at my conduct. He ordered me to go to his table. I obeyed. But I felt nervous when he caught me by the ear. He slapped me twice or thrice and said that he would turn me out of the class if I failed to learn my lessons from the next day.

I felt very much insulted. I said to myself, “Why should I not be good at English as other boys?” I determined to learn my daily English lessons regularly. Since then I did not fail in any class to answer the questions asked by the teachers. My determination became a boon for me. I improved in

English by slow degrees. By the end of the year, I improved a lot and my performance in the class was quite encouraging in the annual examination. I secured 80% marks in English. This was the highest mark not only in our class but also in the whole of our school.

My performance surprised my teachers. They all encourage and advise me to be serious in studies. I listened to them and acted upon their advice. So I was crowned with brilliant success. I stood first in the SSC examination of 1981 and added a new laurel to the glory of my ‘Alma- mater’.

So the event of pulling me by the ear by our English teacher acted as a turning point in my life and so I treat this incident as the most memorable incident of my life
