A Street Beggar

One who begs for alms from street to street is called a beggar. The beggar is a common sight in Bangladesh. Beggars are of different kinds and description. Some are old, some are young. Some can walk, some limp, a few move on push carts. There are singing beggars as well as whining beggars. Begging is regarded as a serious social problem because it encourages idleness and aversion to work. There are some beggars who are professionals. These are idlers. They find it easier to beg than work. But majority of the beggars are homeless and hungry. Nobody employs them. They suffer and ultimately become unfit for work. The first thing that begging creates in a beggar is the loss of his sense of honor. There is no certainty in a beggar’s life. The only certain thing in his life is that each day will be full of misery. He does not have any definite place to live in. His home is wherever he sleeps. There are no fixed hours for his work. If the weather is inclement he suffers most. The fortune of a beggar lies in his capacity to approach people. In fact, he is a man without fortune. He looks forward to the days of religious festivals when people are more charitable than other days. Reasons for begging are many. The unemployment problem and poverty are the two main reasons. Moreover, labour is not always viewed as dignified. Arrangement should be made to turn them into a working force.

Religious festivals offer some respite for beggars, as people tend to be more charitable during those times.The reasons for begging are manifold, with unemployment and poverty being the primary drivers. Unfortunately, manual labor is not always perceived as a dignified profession, further contributing to the problem. A street beggar is found sitting or standing by the roadside and begging for alms. He is seen almost everywhere in towns and cities. He wears torn and patched up clothes. Sometimes he is alone and sometimes he is in company. A mother with a child or two is also sometimes seen begging. A beggar may be a man or a woman or a child. He or she may be an old, crippled or disabled person or he she may be an able-bodied person. Whenever he/she sees a passer-by, he/she stretches out his /her hand for help. A few passers-by stop, give him/her loud shouts and avoid him. A beggar sometimes follows a passer-by at some distance begging for help. Beggars are after all, poor, miserable fellows. Many of them suffer from contagious diseases. They are generally people of bad morals. They help spread diseases in towns and cities immorally. Begging encourages idleness and immorality. The children of beggars also turn beggars. They grow up as professional beggars. So, measures should be taken in prohibition of this bad habit.

একজন রাস্তার ভিখারি যে ব্যক্তি রাস্তায় রাস্তায় ভিক্ষা করে তাকে ভিক্ষুক বলা হয়। বাংলাদেশে ভিক্ষুক একটি সাধারণ দৃশ্য। ভিক্ষুকদের বিভিন্ন প্রকার ও বর্ণনা রয়েছে। কেউ বৃদ্ধ, কেউ তরুণ। কেউ হাঁটতে পারে, কেউ লম্পট, কেউ ধাক্কা গাড়িতে চলে। সেখানে গান গাওয়া ভিক্ষুকের পাশাপাশি হাহাকার করা ভিক্ষুক রয়েছে। ভিক্ষাবৃত্তিকে একটি গুরুতর সামাজিক সমস্যা হিসাবে বিবেচনা করা হয় কারণ এটি অলসতা এবং কাজের প্রতি ঘৃণাকে উৎসাহিত করে। কিছু ভিক্ষুক আছে যারা পেশাদার। এরা অলস। তারা কাজের চেয়ে ভিক্ষা করা সহজ বলে মনে করেন। কিন্তু ভিক্ষুকদের অধিকাংশই গৃহহীন ও ক্ষুধার্ত। কেউ তাদের নিয়োগ দেয় না। তারা কষ্ট পায় এবং শেষ পর্যন্ত কাজের জন্য অযোগ্য হয়ে পড়ে। ভিক্ষাবৃত্তি একজন ভিক্ষুকের মধ্যে প্রথম যে জিনিসটি তৈরি করে তা হল তার সম্মানবোধ হারিয়ে ফেলা। ভিক্ষুকের জীবনে কোন নিশ্চয়তা নেই। তার জীবনের একমাত্র নির্দিষ্ট বিষয় হল প্রতিটি দিন দুঃখে পূর্ণ হবে। তার থাকার কোন নির্দিষ্ট জায়গা নেই। সে যেখানে ঘুমায় সেখানেই তার বাড়ি। তার কাজের কোনো নির্দিষ্ট সময় নেই। আবহাওয়া প্রতিকূল হলে তিনি সবচেয়ে বেশি ক্ষতিগ্রস্ত হন। একজন ভিক্ষুকের সৌভাগ্য তার মানুষের কাছে যাওয়ার ক্ষমতার মধ্যে রয়েছে। আসলে সে ভাগ্যহীন মানুষ। তিনি ধর্মীয় উৎসবের দিনগুলির জন্য অপেক্ষা করেন যখন লোকেরা অন্যান্য দিনের তুলনায় বেশি দানশীল হয়। ভিক্ষা করার কারণ অনেক। বেকার সমস্যা এবং দারিদ্র্য এই দুটি প্রধান কারণ। তদুপরি, শ্রমকে সর্বদা মর্যাদাপূর্ণ হিসাবে দেখা হয় না। তাদের কর্মক্ষম শক্তিতে পরিণত করার ব্যবস্থা করতে হবে।
