Questions and Answers

PART 1: Speaking Questions

1. How many hours do you usually sleep at night?

I usually sleep around seven to eight hours a night. This amount of sleep helps me feel refreshed and energized for the day ahead. I try to maintain a consistent sleep schedule to ensure that I get enough rest.

2. Do you sometimes sleep during the day? [Why/Why not?]

Occasionally, I take a short nap during the day, especially if I’m feeling particularly tired or if I didn’t sleep well the night before. A quick 20-minute nap can really help boost my mood and productivity without interfering with my nighttime sleep.

3. What do you do if you can’t get to sleep at night? [Why?]

If I can’t get to sleep, I usually try to read a book or listen to some calming music. This helps to relax my mind and distract me from any worries that might be keeping me awake. I find that staying away from screens is also beneficial, as the blue light can make it harder to fall asleep.

4. Do you ever remember the dreams you’ve had while you were asleep?

Yes, sometimes I do remember my dreams, especially if they are vivid or particularly interesting. I find it fascinating how dreams can reflect our thoughts and feelings. Occasionally, I even keep a dream journal to jot down memorable dreams and explore their meanings.

PART 2: Describe a Time You Met Someone Who Became a Good Friend

I’d like to talk about my friendship with a person named Sam. I met Sam during my first year at university, in a group project for one of my classes. We were paired together to work on a presentation, which was held in the university's study lounge.

When I first met Sam, I thought he was very friendly and approachable. He had a warm smile and seemed genuinely interested in getting to know everyone. As we started working on the project, I realized he was also quite intelligent and creative, which made collaborating enjoyable.

I think we became good friends because we shared similar interests, especially in music and outdoor activities. We quickly bonded over our love for hiking and often planned weekend trips together. Our friendship grew stronger as we supported each other through various challenges at university. Sam’s positive attitude and sense of humor made our time together not only productive but also really fun.

PART 3: Discussion Topics

Friends at School

1. How important is it for children to have lots of friends at school?

Having friends at school is crucial for children. It not only helps them develop social skills but also provides emotional support. Friends can make the school environment more enjoyable and can positively influence a child’s confidence and overall well-being.

2. Do you think it is wrong for parents to influence which friends their children have?

While parents naturally want the best for their children, I believe it's essential for kids to choose their own friends. Over-influencing their choices can hinder their social development and limit their ability to make independent decisions. A balance should be struck where parents guide but do not control friendships.

3. Why do you think children often choose different friends as they get older?

As children grow, their interests, values, and social circles evolve. They begin to seek out friends who share their hobbies or aspirations, leading to new friendships. This change is a normal part of development, as kids learn more about themselves and what they value in relationships.

Making New Friends

1. If a person is moving to a new town, what is a good way for them to make friends?

A great way to make friends in a new town is to engage in local activities or clubs that align with one’s interests, like sports, arts, or community service. Joining classes or attending local events can also provide excellent opportunities to meet new people.

2. Can you think of any disadvantages of making new friends online?

Yes, while making friends online can be convenient, there are drawbacks. Online friendships might lack the depth and authenticity that in-person relationships often have. Additionally, it can be challenging to assess someone's true character online, leading to potential misunderstandings or risks.

3. Would you say it is harder for people to make new friends as they get older?

Yes, I would say that it often becomes more challenging to make new friends as people get older. Adults tend to have busier schedules, and there are fewer opportunities for social interactions compared to school or college years. However, it’s still possible with some effort and openness to new experiences.
