Questions and Answers
PART 1: Daily Routine

I would like to incorporate more physical activity into my daily routine. While I manage to fit in some exercise, I think having a structured workout plan could enhance my overall well-being and energy levels.
2. Are all your days the same?
Not all my days are the same. My weekdays are usually busy with classes and study sessions, while weekends are more relaxed and often include social activities or family time. This variation keeps my routine interesting.
3. Tell me about your typical weekday and your typical weekend.
On a typical weekday, I wake up early, attend classes, and spend a few hours studying afterward. In the evenings, I like to unwind by reading or watching TV. My weekends are quite different; I enjoy spending time with friends, going out for meals, or pursuing hobbies like painting.
4. What is the balance of work/study and free time in your normal day?
I try to maintain a healthy balance between work and free time. On weekdays, I dedicate around six hours to studying and classes, leaving me with a few hours in the evening for relaxation and personal interests. On weekends, I prioritize leisure and socializing, which helps me recharge for the week ahead.
PART II: Describe Something Important You Own
One of the most important things I own is my laptop.
I got it as a gift from my parents when I started high school, about three years ago. I use it daily for various purposes, including studying, completing assignments, and staying connected with friends and family.
My laptop is crucial for my education. It allows me to research topics, access online resources, and collaborate on projects with classmates. Beyond academics, it serves as a means of entertainment, as I can watch movies and play games during my free time.
This laptop is important to me because it represents the support and encouragement from my family. It has become an essential tool in my life, enabling me to learn and express my creativity while also keeping me connected to the people I care about.
PART III: Discussion Topics
How Values Can Change
1. What kind of possessions show status in your country? In my country, possessions like luxury cars, designer clothing, and high-end electronics often indicate status. People associate these items with success and wealth, making them desirable symbols of social standing.
2. Do you think it was different for your grandparents?Yes, I believe it was different for my grandparents. During their time, practicality and utility were more valued than status symbols. Possessions like land, home-cooked meals, and family connections were often seen as indicators of a successful life.
The Consumer Society
1. Modern society is often called ‘materialistic’. Why do you think this is?Modern society is often considered materialistic due to the emphasis on acquiring goods and wealth. Advertisements and social media perpetuate the idea that happiness is linked to owning more, leading to a culture where possessions are prioritized over experiences and relationships.
2. Do you think consumerism is a positive or a negative development?Consumerism has both positive and negative aspects. On one hand, it drives economic growth and innovation, providing people with choices and convenience. On the other hand, it can lead to excessive waste, environmental degradation, and a constant cycle of wanting more, which may diminish overall satisfaction in life.
The Consumer Market
1. What is the role of advertising?Advertising plays a crucial role in shaping consumer behavior and preferences. It informs consumers about products, creates brand awareness, and can influence purchasing decisions by appealing to emotions and aspirations. Effective advertising often builds a connection between consumers and brands.
2. How do you think the Internet will affect buying patterns in the future?
The Internet will likely continue to transform buying patterns by making shopping more convenient and accessible. With the rise of e-commerce, consumers can compare prices, read reviews, and shop from anywhere at any time. This shift may lead to a decline in traditional retail stores and further increase the demand for personalized online experiences.
