My dear Habib,
I have received your letter in which you showed your keen interest to know about my favourite poet. There are many poets in our country. Of them Kazi Nazrul Islam a poet,
philosopher and patriot whom I like most. He is our national poet. He was a poet of unique vision, a seer who could look beyond the limitations of time and place.
Nazrul, the rebel poet of Bengal, was born on the 11th Jaistha, 1342 B.S in Churulia, a village of Bardwan in West Bengal. Nazrul’s nickname was “Dukhu Miah”. Nazrul felt the pangs of slavery in his heart and turned a rebel poet. In a weekly magazine named ‘Bijli’, his famous work ‘Bidrohi’ was first published in 1328 B.S. When he was 22 years old, he began editing a bi¬weekly called ‘Dhumketu’. His most well-known works are ‘Agni-Bina’, ‘Bisher-Banshi’, ‘Praloyshika’, ‘Dolonchapa,’ ‘Sarbahara’, ‘Sammyabadi’, ‘Chakrabak’, Chandrabindu’, ‘Natun Chand’, ‘Shesh Shaogat’, ‘Bandhan Hara’, ‘Rikter Bedan’ etc. He also wrote some novels of which ‘Mrityukshudha’ and ‘Bayther Dan’ are widely known. He wrote many lyrical poems, religious songs, gazals, love-lyrics, stories, plays and comic-poems for the children. I like Nazrul more than any other man, because he stood against all sorts of oppression. He was a great revolutionary. He taught us to strike, strive and not to yield or surrender. He showed us the part to fight against the enemy of our freedom. Nazrul’s sympathies were always with the downtrodden and the humiliated. He wrote with the blade of a steel sword, as it were, defying all bans and banters. He had indeed a great heart. All his qualities make me love him both as a great poet and a person as well. This is all in brief about my favourite poet.
Let me know about your favourite poet. With love and best wishes.
Yours ever,
Tahseen

My dear Habib,
I hope you’re doing well. It’s always a pleasure to exchange thoughts with you about literature, and today, I want to share with you my admiration for my favorite poet—Kazi Nazrul Islam, the Rebel Poet of Bengal.
Kazi Nazrul Islam’s works have always held a special place in my heart. His poetry, songs, and writings are not only a source of inspiration but also a reflection of the spirit of freedom, equality, and humanity. What I love most about him is how his words ignite a sense of courage and resilience.
Nazrul is famously known as "Bidrohi Kobi" (The Rebel Poet) for his bold and fearless poem Bidrohi (The Rebel). In it, he portrays himself as a force of nature, challenging oppression and injustice with an indomitable spirit. It’s remarkable how he stood up against colonial rule, social inequality, and religious intolerance through his powerful words.
But Nazrul was not just about rebellion; his works beautifully blend love, spirituality, and compassion. Poems like Nandini and Anondomoyeer Agomone show his softer side, expressing deep emotions and profound love for humanity. His devotion to unity is evident in how he embraced both Islamic and Hindu traditions, promoting harmony between communities.
One of his most significant contributions is his creation of Nazrul Geeti—a collection of songs that are a treasure trove of emotions, ranging from patriotism to romance and devotion. Listening to his songs feels like diving into a world of passion and depth.
I also admire his resilience in the face of personal struggles. Despite enduring poverty, imprisonment, and even illness, Nazrul remained steadfast in his mission to inspire and uplift society. His life itself is a testament to his unyielding spirit.
Whenever I read his poetry, I feel a sense of pride and connection to our heritage. His words are timeless, and they continue to resonate with people across generations. If you haven’t yet explored his works in depth, I urge you to do so. Start with Bidrohi or his song Durgam Giri Kantar Moru, and I’m sure you’ll understand why he is so dear to me.
Let me know about your favorite poet or author sometime. I’d love to hear about what inspires you.
Take care and write back soon!
Warm regards,
Tahseen
