Describe a foreign language that you would like to learn
You should say:
· What it is
· Where it is spoken
· How you plan to learn it
· And explain why you want to learn this language
I’m pleased you asked me this question because there is a language that I’ve been dying to learn for ages and I’ve never got round to it. Hopefully, talking about it now might encourage me to stop procrastinating and start learning!
Anyway, the language in question is Italian. Italian is spoken in Italy, obviously, and I’m not entirely sure if it’s spoken anywhere else, but I don’t think so. So, it could be argued that it’s not as useful as Spanish, which is the second most spoken language in the world by native speakers; however, it has been a lifelong dream of mine to go to Italy and being able to speak the
language would make my trip more pleasurable, as I would be able to read menus and converse with the locals.
I guess there are a number of ways I could learn it such as an online course or buy a book, but my preferred method would be to go to the country and live there for around a year in order to become fluent. Sadly, that is just a pipe dream and it’s never going to happen so I’ll have to make do with an online course for starters.
As I touched upon earlier, I want to learn it to make a visit there more enjoyable, but a further reason is I am fascinated by Italian food and love watching cookery shows set in Italy and this has stimulated my desire to learn this language. It is such a beautiful sounding language as well and very different from my mother tongue. To be perfectly honest, I’ve just been bone idle and I need to stop messing about, purchase a course and get started.

I’m excited to discuss this topic because there’s a language I’ve been eager to learn for a long time but haven’t yet gotten around to. The language in question is Italian. Italian is predominantly spoken in Italy, though it is also used in parts of Switzerland and some regions in Croatia and Slovenia.
I plan to learn Italian through an online course initially. While I would love to immerse myself by living in Italy for a year to become fluent, this is more of a dream than a realistic plan at the moment. For now, I’ll start with online lessons and possibly look for language exchange partners or local classes if possible.
The main reason I want to learn Italian is that it would significantly enhance my experience when visiting Italy. Being able to speak the language would make it easier to read menus, converse with locals, and navigate the country more comfortably. Additionally, I am fascinated by Italian cuisine and enjoy watching cookery shows set in Italy. This interest has further fueled my desire to learn the language.
Italian is known for its beautiful sound and rich cultural heritage, which is quite different from my mother tongue. Learning Italian would not only be personally fulfilling but also allow me to connect more deeply with Italy’s vibrant culture and culinary traditions. To be honest, I’ve been quite lazy about starting this learning journey, so now it’s time to stop procrastinating, purchase a course, and get going.

Describe a language other than English that you would like to learn.

And explain why you would like to learn it
Learning a second language is a fantastic way to enhance cognitive skills and immerse oneself in new cultures. It not only broadens your personal and professional horizons but also deepens your understanding of the world. Among the many languages on my list, I have a keen interest in learning Spanish, and here's why.
Spanish is a Romance language and ranks as one of the most widely spoken languages globally. It is an official language in 20 countries across South and Central America, as well as in Spain, and it's increasingly prevalent in the United States. With over 500 million speakers worldwide, mastering Spanish could open doors to diverse opportunities, from engaging with Spanish-speaking communities to enriching travel experiences. Imagine wandering through the vibrant streets of Buenos Aires or exploring the historical sites of Madrid with a fluent grasp of the language—it would undoubtedly transform these experiences.
One of the appealing aspects of Spanish is its relatively straightforward pronunciation and its phonetic nature. Unlike English, which has many irregular spellings and pronunciations, Spanish words are pronounced as they are written. Additionally, Spanish shares many cognates with English—words that look and mean the same, such as "hotel" and "restaurant." These similarities can make the initial stages of learning less daunting.
However, mastering Spanish is not without its challenges. One difficulty lies in the various regional dialects and accents. Spanish spoken in Spain can differ significantly from the Spanish in Mexico or Argentina, which could make understanding native speakers a bit tricky. Furthermore, Spanish has verb conjugations that vary by tense and subject, which might initially overwhelm learners accustomed to the more straightforward conjugation patterns in English.
Despite these challenges, the benefits of learning Spanish are compelling. Being able to communicate in Spanish would allow me to connect with a vast array of people, delve into rich literary and cultural traditions, and access numerous professional opportunities. The thought of engaging with Spanish-speaking friends and participating in Hispanic cultural events excites me, making Spanish a language I am eager to master.
