I’ve chosen to discuss my best friend, Sam, who is a committed vegetarian and is passionate about the environment. The fact that he is a vegetarian and hasn’t eaten meat or any animal products for the past five years shows how much he cares about the planet. Animals, cows in particular, produce methane gas, which is released into the atmosphere. This gas is harmful for the environment and makes the problem of global warming worse, therefore, people who stop eating meat and animal products are greener than those who don’t.

Although levels of methane in the environment are relatively low, its high global warming risk is 21 times that of carbon dioxide and this makes it one of the worst greenhouse gases. A vegetarian diet, therefore, reduces your carbon footprint and is much more environmentally-friendly.

Obviously, this has created problems for him, as the diet in my country includes a great deal of meat and fish. Sometimes when he goes to other people’s houses, there is no vegetarian option for him and all he can eat is chips or rice. He is a strict vegetarian though and would rather starve than eat meat. He is even thinking about turning vegan.

Another way that he is environmentally-friendly is that he tries to recycle as much as possible. For instance, if he buys a product which is wrapped in plastic or cardboard, he will put the waste material in the recycling bin. I have great admiration for him and I try to be more careful about recycling, but I am not sure I could become vegetarian, as I am addicted to meat so I would struggle to give it up.

I’d like to talk about my best friend, Sam, who is a dedicated vegetarian and deeply passionate about protecting the environment. His commitment to vegetarianism is a significant aspect of his efforts to help the planet. For the past five years, Sam has abstained from eating meat or any animal products. This choice is rooted in his understanding of how animal agriculture contributes to environmental issues. Specifically, livestock such as cows produce methane, a potent greenhouse gas that exacerbates global warming. By choosing not to consume animal products, Sam reduces his personal carbon footprint and minimizes the harmful impact on the environment.

Despite his commitment, Sam faces several challenges. In my country, where meat and fish are staples in many diets, finding vegetarian options can be difficult, especially when dining at other people’s homes. Often, he’s left with limited choices like chips or rice. Sam is so devoted to his principles that he’d rather go hungry than compromise his vegetarian diet. He’s even considering becoming vegan to further minimize his environmental impact.

In addition to his diet, Sam is also conscientious about recycling. He diligently separates recyclable materials like plastic and cardboard and ensures they go into the proper recycling bins. His dedication to these practices is truly admirable.

I have a great deal of respect for Sam’s efforts and convictions. He inspires me to be more mindful of my own environmental impact, especially in terms of recycling. While I struggle to imagine giving up meat entirely due to my own dietary habits, I deeply appreciate and admire Sam’s dedication to making a positive difference for the environment. His actions reflect a genuine commitment to sustainability, and he serves as a powerful example of how individual choices can contribute to a larger cause.
