This is quite a challenging topic for me because I’m not that tech savvy and I don’t know an awful lot about gizmos and gadgets so I’m not entirely sure if what I’m going to talk about is AI, but I’ve decided to talk about algorithms, which to the best of my knowledge are a type of AI.
Firstly, let me briefly explain, in layman’s terms, what an algorithm is. In maths, it is basically a set of rules to follow to do a calculation. Many websites such as YouTube and Amazon use a process to decide what to show you to watch or buy. So, if you watch video X then the algorithm thinks that you might like video Y and it appears when you log onto YouTube. Likewise, on Amazon if you buy a certain product, then it will start recommending other similar items to you.
As for why it’s used, well obviously, it’s an indispensable marketing tool for online retailers or platforms. When you’re watching YouTube, it wants you to stay on the platform as long as possible because the more videos you watch, the more ads you see and, consequently, the more revenue YouTube receives from its advertisers. Because of this, many users often find themselves in a YouTube wormhole and, after going on to watch one video, four hours later, they are still glued to their phone or tablet.
How do I feel about it? I have mixed feelings, to be perfectly honest. On the one hand, I feel that we are being manipulated into buying and watching things and that concerns me; however, on the other hand, I’ve watched some videos that I’ve really enjoyed and wouldn’t have discovered if it wasn’t/weren’t for this algorithm.

One notable example of a product based on artificial intelligence is Spotify's recommendation algorithm. This is a sophisticated AI-driven system designed to enhance user experience by personalizing music recommendations.
Spotify’s recommendation algorithm is primarily used for suggesting music and podcasts to users based on their listening history. When you listen to certain songs or genres, the algorithm analyzes your preferences and uses that data to recommend other tracks or artists that you might enjoy. This system is powered by a combination of machine learning techniques and data analysis, which allows it to continuously learn and refine its suggestions over time.
How it works is quite fascinating. The algorithm collects data on the songs you listen to, how often you listen to them, and the time you spend on each track. It then uses this information to identify patterns and similarities among the music you like. For example, if you frequently listen to indie rock bands, Spotify will use this data to recommend other indie rock artists or songs that align with your tastes. Additionally, the algorithm takes into account the listening habits of other users with similar preferences to further enhance its recommendations.
My feelings about this algorithm are quite positive overall. On one hand, it significantly improves the user experience by helping me discover new music that aligns with my tastes, which I might not have found otherwise. The personalized playlists and daily mixes are a testament to how well the algorithm understands my preferences. On the other hand, I am aware that such algorithms can sometimes lead to over-recommendation, where I am constantly exposed to similar types of music and might miss out on exploring a broader range of genres.
In summary, Spotify’s recommendation algorithm is an excellent example of how artificial intelligence can enhance user experiences by providing personalized content. Despite some potential drawbacks, I find it to be a valuable tool that enriches my music listening experience.
