IELTS Speaking Part-2 A time someone didn’t tell you the whole truth about something

Describe a time someone didn’t tell you the whole truth about something

You should say:

·         When this happened

·         What the situation was

·         Who it was

·         And explain why the person didn’t tell the whole truth

This is an incredibly tricky question because often we don’t know

whether people are telling the whole truth or not. There are two types of lies: black lies and white lies. Black lies are the big, bad ones and are usually used for a bad reason; however, white lies are usually used to protect someone or not offend someone and I guess that people tell white lies on a daily basis. When it comes to a lie that I was told and am aware of, the only time that I can think of off the top of my head is a time when my daughter told me a little white lie because she didn’t want to hurt my feelings.

My daughter is a real foodie and, on the whole, she loves everything I make. There was this one time though, and I can remember it vividly because it was her birthday, when I made her a birthday cake and it looked fabulous, but she didn’t like it. The thing is, I had made it using dark chocolate, which is rich and quite bitter and she prefers milk chocolate because it is much sweeter – not as healthy, but much tastier, all the same.

As soon as she put a piece of the cake in her mouth, I could tell from her facial expression that she didn’t like it, but because I had put so much effort into making such a special cake, she felt she had to say something complimentary. ‘Wow, that’s delicious’ she lied. ‘You don’t like it’ I said. She kept insisting that she did, but I wasn’t convinced. I won’t make her that cake again because I know she doesn’t like it, but she’s too polite to tell the truth.

The problem is that when you tell a lie, you have to continue with the lie or you will be found out. I once told a little white lie about a box of chocolates that a friend bought me so now she buys them for me every birthday. Maybe I will grow to like them! I still think it is the right thing to do. If you are in a situation where someone could be offended or hurt by what you say, then little white lies are better than telling the truth.

Describe a Time Someone Didn’t Tell You the Whole Truth About Something

This is a challenging question because often, we may not be aware when people don’t tell us the whole truth. Lies can be categorized into two main types: black lies and white lies. Black lies are significant falsehoods told for malicious reasons, while white lies are generally minor and used to protect someone’s feelings or avoid causing offense. The only instance I can think of where I’m aware of not being told the whole truth involves a white lie from my daughter, intended to spare my feelings.

A few years ago, on my daughter’s birthday, I baked her a special birthday cake. As someone who loves everything I make, I was confident she’d appreciate it. However, I knew from the start that this cake was a bit of a gamble. I had used dark chocolate, which is rich and somewhat bitter, while she prefers the sweeter taste of milk chocolate.

When she took the first bite of the cake, her facial expression betrayed her true feelings. Despite my suspicions, she immediately said, “Wow, that’s delicious,” even though it was clear she didn’t enjoy it. She was being polite and didn’t want to hurt my feelings after all the effort I’d put into making the cake.

I confronted her, saying, “You don’t like it, do you?” She persisted in her praise, but I wasn’t convinced. Her reluctance to tell me the truth was simply a way to avoid disappointing me. In the end, I realized she didn’t enjoy the cake, and I won’t make it for her again, as I understand her taste preferences better now.

This situation illustrates how white lies can sometimes be used to protect someone’s feelings. It’s often easier to accept a white lie rather than face the discomfort of the truth. I once told a white lie about a box of chocolates from a friend, leading her to gift them to me every birthday. While I haven’t developed a taste for them, I believe that in certain situations, small white lies are preferable to causing hurt or offense.
