Describe a time you taught something to a younger person

I was struggling to think of a situation to talk about because I’m not a teacher so teaching is not something I do on a regular basis. Part of the reason for this is I am not the most patient person in the world and I think that to be a good teacher you need loads of patience. Anyway, then I remembered that not so long ago I taught my brother/son/sister/daughter how to make chocolate brownies. He/she had invited some friends round and wanted to make something for them to eat, but he/she had never cooked or baked before so he/she asked for my help.

Although brownies are somewhat straightforward, we made triple chocolate brownies so they were slightly more complex than a plain chocolate brownie. And I’d like to add that there is an art to cooking brownies – if you undercook them, they are too runny and if you overcook them, they are too dry.

We were delighted with his/her first attempt because they were spot on – not too runny nor too dry. All of the guests complimented him/her and said they were the best brownies they had ever tasted. When we were making them, I realised that I am not as impatient as I thought I was. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that I could be a teacher full-time, but for a one-off task such as this, I really enjoyed it. This is probably because my brother/son/sister/daughter is a good student. He/She listened carefully to the instructions and followed them to the letter*.

One of the hardest things when teaching is when people don’t listen – that’s when mistakes happen. Hopefully, in the near future, I will teach him/her to make a few other things, but I’m snowed under with work at the moment so I’m not entirely sure when that will be.

Not long ago, I had the opportunity to teach my younger sibling how to make chocolate brownies. This was a recent event, and it was quite a memorable experience for both of us.

What it was and who you taught it to

The task at hand was baking triple chocolate brownies. My younger sibling, who had never cooked or baked before, wanted to prepare something special for a gathering of friends. They reached out to me for help, knowing that I had some experience in baking. Despite brownies being relatively simple to make, we opted for a more intricate recipe to ensure they were a treat.

Why you taught it

I agreed to teach them because they were eager to learn and it was a great opportunity to bond. Additionally, I wanted them to have the skills to impress their friends and enjoy the process of baking. I also saw it as a chance to challenge my own patience and teaching skills, despite not being a professional educator.

And explain how you felt about it

Teaching them to bake was a surprisingly enjoyable experience. I discovered that I had more patience than I expected, and it was rewarding to see the results of our efforts. The brownies turned out perfectly—neither too runny nor too dry. The compliments from their friends were a testament to our success. Although I don’t see myself becoming a full-time teacher, I appreciated the opportunity to share my knowledge and skills. I hope to teach them a few more recipes in the future, once my schedule permits.
