IELTS Speaking Part-3 Businessman

Do businessmen have to keep working hard even if they are already successful?

Absolutely, success is the result of a relentless process of trying, which means that people should persist in their efforts even when they have attained a certain degree of success. It's not advisable to rest on one's laurels as this can make you lose motivation to make further headway in your business. With a forward-looking mind, it's possible to achieve greater successes than you can even imagine.

What kinds of businesses are popular in this city?

In my city, beauty salons and small coffee shops are quite popular. This can be attributed to the fact that most girls or women strive to look their best and consider spending money on beautifying themselves as essential. Similarly, youths tend to hang out with their friends for some casual chit-chat, which means many cafes are doing well recently. Small restaurants that can accommodate no more than ten people are also popular as many people stop by for a snack or drink when they have time or feel hungry.

Why do businesspeople need creativity?

Creativity is a must-have skill for a successful career, especially in business. The ability to come up with new plans to penetrate the market and predict potential risks involved in running a business gives businesspeople a higher chance of success. For example, if you own a coffee shop, you need to offer new types of drinks to cater to the individual needs of customers. Without a creative mind, sticking to the old menu will make customers dissatisfied and they will seek other coffee shops for a better experience.

What qualities are needed to be successful in business?

In my opinion, knowledge and soft skills are essential. Firstly, understanding business law, marketing, and accounting is crucial as they form the basic structure of a company. Knowing the legalities of running a business, strategizing marketing plans, and having a basic knowledge of accounting to estimate profits or losses are fundamental. Additionally, soft skills like communication, leadership, and problem-solving are indispensable for navigating the business world.

Do businessmen have to work long hours?

Indeed, most businessmen are up to their ears in work and have little time to let their hair down. They spend their days writing emails to business partners, dealing with customers, and handling phone calls. In some corporate cultures, such as in Japan, staff often work longer than the standard 8 hours, staying late to finish their workload. So, a businessman’s life is not as relaxing as some might imagine.

How do businesspeople relax?

Like anyone else, when they are off work, businesspeople might lie down on the sofa for a short rest or take a warm shower to relieve stress. At the workplace, they might gather with colleagues for casual talks to reduce stress, take breaks from the computer screen to relax their eyes, and stretch their arms and legs to ease tense muscles.

When do people in your country retire?

To the best of my knowledge, the retirement age in my country is 65 for males, though I'm not certain about the age for females. Recently, the state has even increased the minimum retirement age, as citizens are needed to contribute more to the country. Ultimately, it depends on the quality of the labor force of a country.

What are the differences between being a boss and working for others?

They are worlds apart. Working for others typically means less pressure and a shared responsibility among colleagues, which can provide support during difficult times. However, the motivation might not be as strong, and some people eventually lose interest in their work. On the other hand, being a boss requires comprehensive abilities such as leadership and organizational skills, and you are solely responsible for the success or failure of your business.
