IELTS Speaking Part-3 Furniture

1. Which do you think are better, old things or new things?

If I had to choose, I would lean towards old things, particularly antiques. My fascination with antique objects stems from my desire to understand the history and stories behind each piece. Additionally, antiques often hold significant monetary value, making them worthwhile investments. For instance, I once sold my stamp collection for over $150 to a cousin. This blend of historical significance and financial value makes old things particularly appealing to me.

2. Do people in your country prefer traditional or modern styles of furniture?

Preferences for furniture styles in my country vary greatly depending on individual tastes and family traditions. However, it's apparent that many younger couples gravitate towards modern furniture. This trend aligns with a broader inclination towards contemporary and foreign styles among younger generations. Conversely, I personally appreciate traditional furniture for its beauty and craftsmanship, often finding that older pieces are constructed with superior quality compared to many modern counterparts.

3. Have there been any recent changes in the kinds of furniture that people in your country use?

Yes, recent years have seen a significant shift influenced by globalization. As foreign styles have permeated our market, many people now opt for modern, often international designs. While some still appreciate traditional furniture for its quality and aesthetic, the predominant trend leans towards contemporary styles, particularly among those with the financial means to afford high-quality modern pieces.

4. What factors should a furniture designer consider when designing a piece of furniture?

A furniture designer must first consider the intended use of the piece. The functionality of the furniture should align with its purpose, whether it's for comfort, storage, or aesthetics. Additionally, understanding the target market is crucial as it dictates the cost and materials used. The designer’s choice of materials will be influenced by the budget and the desired durability and style of the final product.

5. What are the qualities of a good furniture designer?

A good furniture designer should possess a blend of artistic creativity and practical sensibility. Artistic talent is essential for creating visually appealing designs, while practicality ensures that the furniture is functional and durable. Furthermore, a designer must be aware of market trends and consumer needs. Some designers focus solely on creating art pieces, which may not always be commercially viable, but the best designers balance artistic vision with practical considerations to meet both aesthetic and functional demands.
