My dear Rifat,

It's been quite a while since I last wrote to you, and for that, I must apologize. The demands of my exams kept me occupied, leaving little time for correspondence. However, now that my examinations are over, I finally have the opportunity to catch up with you.

Last night, I had the pleasure of watching the film "Pather Panchali," and I simply had to share my thoughts with you. Adapted from the novel by Bibhuti Bhusan Bandopadhya and directed by the late Satyajit Ray, this film is truly a masterpiece in every sense of the word.

The narrative revolves around a poor Brahmin family, comprising Harihar, his elderly sister Indira Thakrun, his wife Sarvajaya, and their children Durga and Apu. Despite their struggles for survival, the children, particularly Apu and Durga, exude a vibrant innocence as they immerse themselves in the wonders of nature.

What struck me most about the film was its simplicity, yet profound impact. Satyajit Ray masterfully captured every nuance, ensuring that every detail felt authentic and true to life. The performances were so natural that it felt as though I was observing real-life events rather than a scripted film.

The cinematography, locations, and overall production quality were impeccable, creating a timeless cinematic experience. I was particularly moved by the scenes depicting the poignant deaths of Durga and Indira Thakrun, which are among the most memorable moments ever captured on film.

Furthermore, the music composed by Ravi Shankar added another layer of depth and emotion to the film, enhancing its overall impact. "Pather Panchali" not only provides insight into the lives of rural Bengal but also serves as a universal story that resonates with audiences worldwide.

I highly recommend that you watch this remarkable film at your earliest convenience. I have no doubt that you will find it as captivating and thought-provoking as I did.

That's all for today. Sending you warm regards and affection.

Yours ever,

Tahseen

Dear Rifat

Your sweet note is to my hand. It really gave me much pleasure when I came to know that you have recently had a study tour. Today I am writing to you about a film I have recently enjoyed.

Two of my cousins have recently come to spend some days in our house with me, as their examination is over. We three planned to go to watch a movie named ‘Lukochuri’ at ‘Nupur’. Yesterday we went to watch the movie. The story was alright but the director could not express the main act properly. The actors seemed to be very shy in front of the camera and the right expression wasn’t just coming into the face. They looked as if they were just standing up and reading the dialogues. As my elder brother had appreciated that film, I became interested to watch the movie. But after watching it, I became disappointed. The main reason is that the movie I have watched was acted by the new artists. But what my elder brother watched was the old one in which the prominent artists performed. I hope that experience would make them brave. Then I may get the real interest in enjoying the film. I do not know whether you have seen the movie. If you watch it, let me know about your opinion. This is all for today.

With love.

Yours ever,

Tahseen

Dear Fatin

Many days have passed since we wrote each other. Because of my examination I was very busy. I am sorry for that. Just after the examination I have had the scope of enjoying the film, ‘Devdas’ based on the famous novel of Sarat Chandra Chattapadhay. Today I am going to write about it.

In this film, Devdas is the son of an affluent ‘zamindar’. Wealth and aristocracy dominates his existence. He falls in love with Parbati or Paru. However, the reverie is broken when his elders sent Devdas to London for education. When Devdas returned, Paru’s mother proposed to the family of Devdas about Paru’s marriage. But it was met with condescension. By that time Devdas realised that he was deeply in love with Paru. Heart-broken Paru entered into a chaste marriage with a wealthy, much older man, Zamindar Bhuvan. On the other hand Devdas shattered in mind, took refuge in anguish and alcohol. Then after Chunilal, a profligate friend of Devdas, introduced him to Chandramukhi. Devdas was intensely loved by two women, who were never meant to be his. One, whom he could never love and the other, whom he could never stop loving. However, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the director of the film is a master craftsman and has a way with telling a story through celluloid.

But you know that I could not enjoy the film very well. Of course, the reason is that the film does not conform exactly to the novel. The film has become so modernised and colourful that it does not represent resemblance to the then society of Bengal. As a Bengali, I desired to watch the film on the same context as it is in the novel. I feel that the originality is missing in the film, which has failed to fulfill my desire. This has made me think that it is humiliating to the writer of the novel. So, I am sorry to say that I could not enjoy the film from the core of my heart.

This is all for today. Hope to hear from you regarding this. With love and best wishes.

Yours ever,

Tahseen
