Natural Calamities of Bangladesh: An obstacle to progress Bangladesh is called the land of natural calamities. The prime natural disasters of this country are flood, storm, cyclone, drought and famine. Flood visits our country every year due to heavy rainfall. It is the most devastating one of all natural calamities. It takes a serious turn in the monsoon. Due to heavy rain, most of the rivers overflow their banks and thus cause flood. It washes away different types of crops, cattle, homes and properties. The devastating floods in the years of 1988 and 1998 are very remarkable. Most of the districts in the southwest of Bangladesh had been inundated violently. Storm is not less destructive than flood. Storm causes abrupt damage to our life and property. Affected people cannot get the opportunity to save themselves nor their properties. It blows away our homes, trees, cattle and many things. But when a storm revolves violently round a centre, it is called cyclone. It moves at a high speed ranging from forty to more than hundred kilometres per hour. During the last few years, several cyclones swept over our country and caused immense harm to our people. Cyclone is a curse to the inhabitants of the coastal regions of Bangladesh. The tidal bore and the heavy showers wash away the stores of foodstuff and cause terrible damage. Drought causes serious harm to our crops and trees. Due to the want of water farmers cannot grow plants nor can produce bumper crops. As an aftermath, famine occurs. Many people die from hunger. However, we have to reduce the loss caused by various natural calamities. Using modern weather forecast, prior warning can be given to the people who are likely to be affected storm, cyclone etc. Moreover, the affected people and domestic livestock can be easily shifted to a safer place during flood and cyclone. Besides, a quick relief, medical treatment and essential medicines should be supplied among the affected people. Some effective measures should be taken by the govt. as well as different NGO’s with a view to eliminating sufferings of the victims.
Natural Calamities
Natural calamities are the disasters which are inflicted by God, or Nature, or man and his world. Bangladesh is often hit by natural calamities like flood, cyclone, drought, earthquakes, landslides, tidal bores, excessive rainfall, river erosion, famine which bring great loss to the life and property of our country almost every year. Environmental pollution, climate change, global warming, greenhouse effect, deforestation, lack of plans etc. are responsible for these natural calamities. Many people becoming homeless and helpless suffer untold sufferings. Houses are destroyed, cattle are washed away, crops are greatly damaged and trees are uprooted. The prices of all essentials go up. Famine breaks out. Thousands of people and animals die for want of food. Many dangerous diseases like cholera, typhoid, diarrhea and dysentery break out in an epidemic form. The educational institutions are closed down for a long time. In a word the whole nation undergoes extreme sufferings and socio-economic pressure. Though we cannot prevent natural disasters as we have no hand in nature, we can reduce the damage caused by natural calamities by using the modern technology of weather warning. Flood can be prevented by building embankments, barrages and a well planned irrigation. The river beds should be dredged for carrying more water by the rivers. An efficient relief measure should also be taken to mitigate the suffering of the flood victims. In fine, it can be said that natural calamities for a poor country like Bangladesh are destructive. So, steps should be taken by the government as well as the conscious citizens raising public awareness to prevent their destructive effect for the greater interest of the country.
NATURAL DISASTER IN BANGLADESH
I know that Bangladesh is prone to natural disasters. Those disasters are cyclone, tidal bore and flood. Global warming is the main cause of these disasters 1 experienced a cyclone in 1991. Then I was a child. So I can remember a little what had happened during that cyclone. From my memory I can say that the cyclone caused a lot of damages. The wind was blowing so violently that our house was shivering severely. We were afraid that our house might be damaged. However, the house did not collapse but we could not sleep that night in fear. In the morning, people came out of their houses with anxieties. Many houses were damaged and many trees were uprooted. Branches of strongly rooted trees were broken down. Water reached our yard. Many coconuts which were separated from cluster were floating on water. During that cyclone many cattle died falling under collapsed houses. Many people were killed at different places and many were lost. A lot of educational institutions and trees were damaged. The cyclone caused untold sufferings to people. In fact, we are helpless before the natural disasters. We can't prevent them. We can only take some measures to lessen the sufferings of the victims. and to minimise the loss of property. Our govt can buildup some permanent

Nuclear family
The nuclear family or elementary family is a term used to define a family group consisting of a pair of adults and their children. I live in a nuclear family. Our family consists of four members such as my father and mother, my sister and myself. Nuclear family is getting popular nowadays because in such a family one can live according to one’s own will. The expenditure here is less than that of an extended family. In a nuclear family one may have much facility. He can enjoy his own life. He has no binding to anyone. The advantages of a nuclear family are stability, legacy, moral coding, skill building, shared responsibility, mutual support. The disadvantages of a nuclear family are that here he has to live alone. He has no companion to share his joys and sorrows. He feels lonely. I do not like it because here one has no friend or companion to share one’s feelings. In recent decades, this traditional form of the family has undergone major changes, with increasing rates of divorce leading to single-parent families, remarriages, resulting in extended families. These trends and the resulting problems that they cause, especially for the children, has brought the advantages of traditional nuclear families back into focus. There is none here to console one in distress or depression. But above all nowadays nuclear family is getting more popular.
OUR NATIONAL FLAG
A national flag is not merely a piece of cloth but is a symbol of the love we have for our country. When the national flag is hoisted full mast, we feel proud of it. To the outside world, the national flag carries the identity of our nation. Our national flag has a proportion of 5:3; that is the width of the flag must be three fifths of the length. The design of our flag is a two-colour combination ---- red and green. The green colour is the background in the middle of which is pasted a red circle. The red circle indicates a burning sun and the green background suggests the lush green of our nature. The red sun also suggests the blood sacrificed by our people in achieving the independence. The green colour on the other hand shows the energy of our people. A great sense of honour is attached to the national flag. It is never to be desecrated. The more a country prospers, the more a national flag gains in dignity. It is our hope and aspiration that our national flag will earn a global recognition in future.
National Flag
Every free country has its own National flag. Bangladesh is also a free country. So we have our own national flag. The proportion of the length and breadth is 10 : 6 and the radius of the flag is one fifth of its length. It symbolises our sovereignty, integrity and freedom. It has a grass-green background with a red sun placed at the centre. The green background means the eternal green of Bangladesh. The red sun is the symbol of a new born nation. It depicts the bloody war of independence. The sun also means a rising nation. Everyone pays respect to his national flag. A national flag can be a great inspiration to everyone who loves his country. The national flag is sacred. It represents our country's honour. It is hoisted on solemn occasions. But unfortunately, we are using this flag on trivial occasions. Consequently, most people do not show due respect to It. They disrespect their own country. So, the Government should protect it and we should honour our motherland by showing proper respect to our national flag.
THE NATIONAL MEMORIAL
The national memorial at Savar is a symbol of nation’s respect to those heroic sons of the country who laid down their life to gain independence during the war of liberation. Though the memorial stands for the martyrs, the achievement it represents can not be measured because freedom can not be limited. It is the symbol of the nation’s pride and dignity. The most prominently visible portion of the memorial is the 150 feet long tower standing on a base 130 feet wide. The foundation of the memorial was laid on the first anniversary of the victory day. There is a plan to build a huge complex covering 126 acres of land. The plan of this complex includes a mosque, a library and a museum. Relics of the war of liberation will be kept in the museum. They will always remind to our countrymen and all those who come to visit the place, the supreme sacrifice of the freedom loving people of Bangladesh. The most moving sight of the complex is the several graves of the martyred freedom fighters just beside the tower. standing there we see the fruit of their sacrifice standing upright to declare the triumph of their glorious deeds.
OUR NATIONAL MEMORIAL
Our National Memorial is situated at Savar in Dhaka. The National Memorial is a symbol of the nation’s respect for the martyrs of the War of Liberation. It is built with concrete, but made of blood. It stands 150 feet tall, but every martyr it stands for stands so much taller. It is an achievement the dimensions of which can be measured, but it stands for all achievement which is immeasurable. It stands upright for the millions of martyrs who laid down their lives so that we may stand upright, in honour and dignity, amongst the nations of the world. Most prominently visible is the 150 feet tower that stands on a base measuring 130 feet wide. There is actually a series of 7 towers that rise by stages to a height of 150 feet. The foundation was laid on the first anniversary of the Victory Day. There is actually a plan to build a huge complex in several phases. The entire complex will cover an area of 126 acres. The plan of this complex includes a mosque, a library and a museum. The relics of the Liberation War will be kept in the museum. They will ever remind our countrymen and all who would come to visit the museum of the valiant struggle and supreme sacrifices of a freedom loving people. The most moving sight of the complex is the several graves of the martyred freedom fighters; close to the tower. Standing in front of the graves we bow down our heads in respect, as the towers soar up symbolizing the loftiness of their spirit. The national memorial is a reminder to all oppressors that the weapons of freedom need not be very big, and that oppressors will always be defeated. And the will of people prevails, for man is born to be free.
A NIGHTMARE
It was a nightmare. I was too thrilled to bag the first prize in a lucky draw. It was a free holiday and travel to the Disneyland. I boarded a jumbo jet. Immediately it soared high in the sky. But my joy was short-lived. It kept on going higher and higher. I was terribly frightened. While it was wandering, it crashed with a satellite and broke into pieces. I started falling down. Suddenly, I saw a huge bird, which was as big as a helicopter. I managed to catch its wings. The bird after some time landed on a ship. I got down on the deck. I was thinking that my life has been saved. But this was not so. Suddenly, there was a big blast and the ship broke into pieces. I tried to save my life holding a wooden plank and swimming. It was the unending sea which was full of sharks and whales. I was so frightened that I shouted ‘Mother-Mother’. As soon as my mother heard my call, she woke me up and asked me what happened. I was so happy to find that it was only a ‘frightening dream.’
A NURSE/NURSING AS A PROFESSION
Man has three duties --- duty to God, duty to parents and duty to mankind. A nurse is such a person who dedicates her whole life to the service of the people who are ill, injured and wounded. The field she renders her dedicated service to is called nursing. The job of a nurse is very noble. It enables a person to serve the suffering humanity. In our country one needs minimum academic qualifications of S. S. C. to be a nurse. Moreover, one has to study for three years in the Nurses’ Training Centre and this is followed by one year’s practical training in any Medical College Hospital. After completing the course successfully nurses are employed in hospitals and clinics. The job of a nurse is very tiring and trying. She always looks after the patients. A nurse is very vigilant. She renders her heartfelt service to mitigate the agonies and sufferings of the patients. She shares the sorrows and sufferings of the patients. The importance of a nurse beggars description. Hospitals and clinics cannot go even a single day without a nurse. So steps should be taken to ensure due social and financial status for the nurses so that they can keep the torch of Florence Nightingale illuminated.

The Nobel Prize is the world's most prestigious prize. Nobel Prizes are awarded every year for outstanding achievements in the fields of science, literature and for promoting world peace. Dynamite is used to destroy mountains, dig petrol, wells and in war. The prizes are awarded to encourage and recognise the outstanding contributions of top-most figures in different fields. Professor Dr Yunus has been awarded Nobel Peace Prize for his contribution to remove poverty with the help of micro-credit. We feel proud of him because he has made us feel proud all over the world. Because Dr Yunus is the first Bangladeshi to get Nobel Prize in peace.
NOISE POLLUTION*
Sound is a symptom of life. But loud sound creates problem for all. Nowadays noise pollution has reached an alarming stage in human life. It has harmful effects on our life and activities. When the sound is at normal, tolerable, pleasant level, it is simply called ‘sound’. But when it is sharp and harsh to the ears, it becomes ‘noise’. Serious harm can be caused to people if they are regularly exposed to sounds exceeding 70 decibels. Because of the growth of urban population and the increasing use of machines in our everyday life, there has been a general increase in the level of sound around us. On an average, people in the cities are exposed to sounds ranging from 30 to 90 decibels or even more. It has dangerous effect on our auditory nerves. It may cause deafness and psychological imbalance. Really it has become a threat to patients, children and old people. It is more dangerous to the patients suffering from heart diseases. Sound pollution has crossed the limits of human endurance. So it is high time for us to take necessary to check it. Strict laws should be enforced in this regard. Moreover we all should cultivate the virtue of quietness in domestic as well as public life.
A Nuclear Family
Today a nuclear family is regarded as the most up-to-date form of the family all over the world. There are mainly two categories of families like an extended family and a nuclear family. I am a first year student of an old and ideal college in our Upazila. I am lucky because I am a member of a nuclear family. A nuclear family is a small and planned family consisting of only parents and dependent children. I like the small family very much because there are a lot of advantages and facilities in a nuclear family. A member of a nuclear family enjoys almost all rights and amenities of modern life. A nuclear family is free from noise, chaos and disorder A student of a nuclear family finds enough time to study. So he can easily concentrate on his studies properly which helps him to make a better result in the exams. A nuclear family is a family where one can lead a disciplined , planned, peaceful, happy and cheerful life. On the other hand a member of an extended family is deprived of basic needs and facilities of a life. A student of a big family can not concentrate on studies well because of chaos and noise. The only disadvantage of a nuclear family is loneliness One finds no scope to exchange one's views and ideas with others. A member of a small family leads a dismal andcheerless life elf It is obvious (4vT 11-oft) that a dismal life is. better than a chaotic and noisy life. All these reasons now-a-days a nuclear family is getting popularity in our society too. I do support and suggest all to live in a nuclear family fora safer, better, healthier and longer life.
