Story:Rabindranath Tagore was born in 1861 into a respectable family at Jorasanko in Kolkata. He went to school early and wrote his first verse at the age of eight. At the age of seventeen, in 1878, he reached London to attend school. He gathered much experience from his stay in London, and this experience had a lasting effect on his later life. In 1880, Rabindranath was called back to India. He returned home without any qualification of distinction. However, he never gave up his habit of writing poetry. He wrote Gitanjali, a collection of Bengali songs of superior quality. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1913 for Gitanjali.

Bangla Translation:রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুর ১৮৬১ সালে কলকাতার জোড়াসাঁকোতে একটি মর্যাদাপূর্ণ পরিবারে জন্মগ্রহণ করেন। তিনি ছোটবেলায় স্কুলে যান এবং আট বছর বয়সে তাঁর প্রথম কবিতা লেখেন। সতেরো বছর বয়সে, ১৮৭৮ সালে, তিনি পড়াশোনা করতে লন্ডনে যান। লন্ডনে থাকার সময় তিনি অনেক অভিজ্ঞতা অর্জন করেন এবং এই অভিজ্ঞতার জীবন তার পরবর্তী জীবনে একটি স্থায়ী প্রভাব ফেলে। ১৮৮০ সালে রবীন্দ্রনাথকে ভারতের বাড়িতে ডেকে আনা হয়। তিনি কোনো বিশেষ যোগ্যতা ছাড়াই বাড়িতে ফিরে আসেন। তবে তিনি কখনই কবিতা লেখার অভ্যাস ছাড়েননি। তিনি গীতাঞ্জলি লিখেন, যা উচ্চমানের বাংলা গানের একটি সংকলন। ১৯১৩ সালে তিনি গীতাঞ্জলির জন্য নোবেল পুরস্কার লাভ করেন।

Story:Nelson Mandela was the greatest leader of South Africa. In fact, he was one of the greatest leaders of the world who struggled against apartheid throughout his whole life. The blacks were treated cruelly and were denied all basic human rights. They were aliens in their own country and were subjected to all sorts of indignities. Even dogs received much better treatment than the blacks. The great leader vowed to put an end to the inhuman practice. He was thrown behind the prison bars, but the oppressive rulers could not break the spirit. Eventually, the great leader realized the goal of liberating his own people.

Bangla Translation:নেলসন ম্যান্ডেলা দক্ষিণ আফ্রিকার সবচেয়ে মহান নেতা ছিলেন। প্রকৃতপক্ষে, তিনি আপারথেডের বিরুদ্ধে সারা জীবন ধরে সংগ্রাম করা বিশ্বের সবচেয়ে মহান নেতাদের একজন। কৃষ্ণাঙ্গদের প্রতি নিষ্ঠুর আচরণ করা হয়েছিল এবং তাদের সমস্ত মৌলিক মানবাধিকার থেকে বঞ্চিত করা হয়েছিল। তারা নিজেদের দেশে পরবাসী ছিল এবং সকল প্রকার অবমাননার শিকার হয়েছিল। এমনকি কুকুরগুলোরও কৃষ্ণাঙ্গদের চেয়ে অনেক ভালো আচরণ করা হয়েছিল। মহান নেতা অমানবিক এই অনুশীলন শেষ করার শপথ করেছিলেন। তাকে কারাগারের পেছনে নিক্ষেপ করা হয়েছিল, কিন্তু অত্যাচারী শাসকরা তার মনোবল ভাঙতে পারেনি। শেষ পর্যন্ত, মহান নেতা তার নিজের জনগণের মুক্তির লক্ষ্য অর্জন করেন।

Story:Long ago, there lived a Sultan in a country. He wanted to appoint an honest man as his tax collector. So, he asked for the wise counsellor’s advice. Then he invited applicants. A number of people applied for the job. The applicants were asked to meet the Sultan one by one. When they all arrived, the Sultan asked them to dance. They came through a passage where gold coins were kept. All the applicants blushed and refused to accept one. Then he found the desired man.

Bangla Translation:অনেক আগে, একটি দেশে এক সুলতান বাস করতেন। তিনি তার ট্যাক্স সংগ্রহকারী হিসেবে একজন সৎ লোককে নিযুক্ত করতে চেয়েছিলেন। তাই তিনি জ্ঞানী উপদেষ্টার পরামর্শ চাইলেন। তারপর তিনি আবেদনকারীদের আমন্ত্রণ জানালেন। চাকরির জন্য অনেক লোক আবেদন করেছিল। আবেদনকারীদের একে একে সুলতানের সামনে উপস্থিত হতে বলা হয়েছিল। যখন তারা সবাই উপস্থিত হল, সুলতান তাদের নাচতে বললেন। তারা একটি পথে এল যেখানে সোনালী মুদ্রা রাখা ছিল। সকল আবেদনকারী লজ্জা পেল এবং একটিও গ্রহণ করতে অস্বীকৃতি জানাল। তারপর তিনি কাঙ্ক্ষিত মানুষটিকে খুঁজে পেলেন।

2. Rajshahi Board 2017: Aristotle

Rearranged Sequence: d → i → e → j → a → c → f → h → b → g

Story:Aristotle was born in Greece. He was the son of a royal physician. His father wanted him to be a physician, but he never cherished to be so. He wanted to be a free thinker. As a result, he studied under a great thinker, Plato. Plato taught Aristotle according to his own way. Later on, Aristotle took the pen to write on topics suitable for human civilization. ‘Politics’ is one of his famous books which expose the fullest development of his wisdom. Story:Once a lad went to a famous teacher. He had expressed his desire to acquire knowledge. He begged to instruct him in the arts and sciences. The teacher wished to find out the ability of the boy. He asked him where God was. The teacher thought highly of the boy’s understanding. The boy devoted himself to earning knowledge. The lad replied that he would answer if he would tell where he is not. He praised him highly. He agreed to teach the lad.

Bangla Translation:একবার একটি ছেলের একটি বিখ্যাত শিক্ষকের কাছে যাওয়ার গল্প। তিনি জ্ঞান অর্জনের ইচ্ছা প্রকাশ করেছিলেন। তিনি তাকে কলা ও বিজ্ঞান শেখানোর জন্য অনুরোধ করেছিলেন। শিক্ষক ছেলেটির দক্ষতা যাচাই করতে চেয়েছিলেন। তিনি তাকে জিজ্ঞেস করলেন, "ঈশ্বর কোথায়?" শিক্ষক ছেলেটির বোঝার বিষয়ে উচ্চ ধারণা পোষণ করেছিলেন। ছেলে জ্ঞান অর্জনে নিজেকে নিয়োজিত করেছিল। ছেলেটি উত্তর দিল যে, তিনি যদি বলেন কোথায় তিনি নেই, তবে তিনি উত্তর দেবেন। তিনি তাকে উচ্চ প্রশংসা করেছিলেন। তিনি ছেলেটিকে শেখানোর জন্য সম্মত হলেন।

Story:One day Napoleon, the king of France, was walking along the seashore. Suddenly he noticed a wonderful thing. An English boy was making a small boat. The boy was brought before him, and he asked him what he would do with such a small boat. The boy said, “My country is on the other side of the sea. I shall cross the sea and go to my country by this boat.” He said, “Please let me go to my country.” Napoleon was charmed by the words of the small boy. He made all arrangements to send him to his country.

Bangla Translation:একদিন ফ্রান্সের রাজা নেপোলিয়ন সমুদ্র তীরে হাঁটছিলেন। হঠাৎ তিনি একটি আশ্চর্যজনক বিষয় লক্ষ্য করলেন। একটি ইংরেজী ছেলে একটি ছোট নৌকা তৈরি করছিল। ছেলেটিকে তার সামনে আনা হয়েছিল এবং তিনি জিজ্ঞেস করেন, “এত ছোট নৌকায় তুমি কি করবে?” ছেলেটি বলল, “আমার দেশ সমুদ্রের অন্যদিকে। আমি এই নৌকায় করে সমুদ্র পার হয়ে আমার দেশে যাব।” তিনি বললেন, “অনুগ্রহ করে আমাকে আমার দেশে যেতে দিন।” নেপোলিয়ন ছোট ছেলেটির কথায় মুগ্ধ হলেন। তিনি তাকে তার দেশে পাঠানোর সব ব্যবস্থা করলেন।

1. Rearrange the following sentences to make a coherent order. [Dhaka Board -2016]

(i) He used to tell interesting stories to the people of the village.

(ii) He never spoke the rest of his life.

(iii) His name was Nambi.

(iv) He lived in a temple at the edge of the village and passed his time under the banyan tree in front of the temple.

(v) Before telling a story, he used to light a lamp in front of the tree.

(vi) There was a remote village named Somal. (vii) One day, he could not continue his story. (viii) After a few days, he called all the villagers and told them something.

(ix) He was so ignorant that he could not tell his age, but he could make up stories.

(x) The villagers were enchanted by a man.

2. Rearrange the following sentences to make a coherent order. [Rajshahi Board- 2016]

(i) He did not find any safe place to keep the bag and could not think where to keep the money.

(ii) He gradually realised that he had money, but no peace of mind.

(iii) He dug a hole in his hut and kept the money there.

(iv) So, he could not devote himself to his work.

(v) The farmer was surprised and said to himself, “One thousand rupee is a lot of money.”

(vi) Now, a thought took hold of the farmer that his money could be stolen any time.

(vii) He said to him, “Look my friend! I have brought one thousand rupees for you. Keep this money and remove your distress.”

(viii) The rich man went to the farmer with one thousand rupees in a bag.

(ix) He took the bag of money from the rich man and thanked him.

(x) This thought kept him awake and his sleep fled away at night.

(i) The crow tried to turn the jar over the over again but failed.

(ii) At last he found a jar in a garden.

(iii) As he was leaving the jar in despair, he noticed a heap of pebbles nearby.

(iv) There was some water in the jar, but it was at the bottom and out of his reach.

(v) He flew from one place to another in search of water.

(vi) He took some pebbles and started dropping them into the jar.

(vii) Then he hit upon a plan.

(viii) A crow was very thirsty and wanted to drink water.

(ix) When the water came to the mouth of the jar the crow drank his full.
