A Parliament House is where the representatives of a country convene to enact necessary laws, adopt development plans and programs, and discuss various national issues. Our Parliament House is named the "Sangsad Bhaban" and is situated in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka. It is renowned as one of the most striking Parliament Buildings globally, featuring a unique and unparalleled design. Designed by the world-famous American architect Louis I. Kahn, this remarkable structure is encompassed by a man-made lake called the Crescent Lake. The Sangsad Bhaban is an impressive nine-story modern building towering at 155 feet, equipped with all contemporary facilities, boasting 1,605 doors and 335 windows. Within, it accommodates 354 seats for Members of Parliament (MPs), 56 for guests, 40 for journalists, and 430 for spectators. Additionally, it comprises three party rooms, each with 153 seats. Construction of the Sangsad Bhaban commenced in 1964 and was ultimately completed in 1982, with the first parliamentary session taking place on February 15th of the same year. Despite its grandeur, the annual maintenance cost is approximately 50 million, a remarkable feat for a developing nation.
